DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Hotel and hostel pick-up.

You’ll hop into the mini-bus and begin the two-hour trip to Piedra del Molino. Upon arrival, we will stop and grab the bikes, before descending (still by vehicle) the famous, zigzagging Cuesta del Obispo. This beautiful road is located halfway between Salta and Cachi, and will take you through some of the most prominent landscapes in the region and country.

We leave the Lerma Valley behind, driving on National Route 68, and crossing some pretty little towns such as Cerrillos, La Merced and El Carril. We’ll turn westwards through Provincial Route 33, and you’ll note how the surroundings start to change drastically, this being one of the most characteristic aspects of the province.

Driving right next to the Chicoana/Escoipe river, it all starts becoming greener, and you’ll see ancient rocks. This is a beautiful location, used during the production of “La Guerra Gaucha”, a movie from the 1940’s depicting the War of Independence back in the 19th century. As we keep climbing towards our destination, the landscape begins to turn more and more arid, until we reach El Maray (our last stop before ascending the Cuesta del Obispo itself), a very nice place to taste some great empanadas, and even buy some handmade souvenirs!

According to history, some bishop from Tucuman spent an uncomfortable night in the middle of the road in 1622, during his long trip to Cachi. We still honor him in the present day, by calling the road “The Bishop’s Slope”. This route starts at approximately 1700 metres above sea level, and reaches 3340 at Piedra del Molino, in only 20 kilometres full of twists and curves - prepare to feel a bit dizzy!

After completing this set of turns, we reach the highest point between Salta and Cachi, where an authentic granite millstone was left there decades ago, by a merchant who had some problems with his wagon on his way to Cachi… He decided to never come back for it.

After going through the security measures and making sure all the equipment is ready, you’ll start cycling downhill. Enjoy unique views, the wind blowing in your face, and the sensation, which is like floating over the pavement. There are some stops on the way to enjoy the landscape, eat a snack, take some pictures, and catch a breath, before some more pedalling. The mini-bus is always by our side, making sure everything is fine, and ready to take us safe and sound back to Salta after a day of speed, adrenaline and beautiful mountains!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  1. What time zone is used in Salta?

Local time in Salta is GMT -3, the same as on Argentina's mainland.

  2. What kind of weather can we find in Salta?

Salta, located in a tropical area, has a warm climate year-round. However, there are quite marked variations in its different regions, due to the disparity in the terrain elevation. January is the hottest month in Salta, with an average temperature of 22°C (72°F), and the coldest month is June, at 12°C (54°F). September is the month with the most daily sunshine hours, at 11. The wettest month is January, with an average of 182mm of rain.

  3. What should I bring to the tour?

You should bring a windbreaker or water proof jacket, sunscreen, a cap or hat, comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for biking, gloves for biking (it could be cold, so you will need something to protect your hands), and sunglasses. Don't forget to bring your camera, a bottle of water, and extra cash for your personal expenses.

  4. Will I get problems with altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness is a real possibility here. If you are arriving directly from the coast, you may need up to a couple of days to acclimatize. Dizziness, shortness of breath, and headaches are common symptoms, but extended bouts of nausea and vomiting are not unheard of amongst those that have rushed their ascent. The locals swear by chewing coca leaves, and although they do relieve the symptoms, it may cause you to fail a drug test. Anyone not already fully acclimatized is advised to pick up some medicine (such as Dramamine) from the pharmacy in Salta before departure. You can also drink tea or coffee to help (but most importantly, drink water to stay hydrated).
