DETAILED DESCRIPTION

At 10am, your bilingual freelance Wally guide will be waiting for you outside the front entrance of the Museo Bellas Artes (in line to the street side). You can’t miss Wally, who’ll be wearing a white and red striped T-shirt (this is much easier to find in Santiago than in the fun kids’ books). We’ll spend a few minutes in Parque Forestal getting to know each other, and you’ll also learn about the museum itself, before heading off.

At 10:30am, we’ll take a walk through the Esmeralda Neighborhood and discover how the city's heart beats. Then we’ll wander on to “La Chimba”, on the other side of the river. By now, it’s most likely we’ll have found ourselves a lovely tour dog companion.

At 11:15am, follow your senses to the markets, where your mouth will begin to water and your belly flutter with anticipation. We start with the Mercado Central, where you will meet some of our favourite vendors, and they will show you their catch of the day. We then follow the rainbow of colours that is Santiago’s famous market, La Vega. Here, you will discover fruit and veg that you have never even seen before.

At 12:00pm, just around the corner from here, you will discover Patronato. This is Santiago’s Middle Eastern, Korean and Peruvian District. After learning about the Asian influence buried in Santiago’s centre, we head off to another kind of burial… the General Cemetery (excuse the awful pun). We take the Metro together, heading 2 stops east to the train station Cementerios. The cemetery is a contrast between burial grounds fit for kings, and small graves stacked on top of each other. We’ll have some stories to tell about funeral traditions, and the people buried here. You will realize that this is more than a place of grief - it is also a place of discovery, and where some people like to spend their Saturday afternoons.

Lastly, at 1:00pm, the tour ends on a high - it’s time to hit a bar! …That’s an acceptable time for a drink, right? Well it is in Chile, so take in ALL the culture, my friend.

Here we finish off the tour, and your freelance guide will offer up his best advice and recommendations over a drink - feel free to ask any questions. The bar serves up a cheap and delicious lunch, which people often like to have after the tour. Don’t forget, this is a pay-what-you-feel tour, so enjoy and relax! A tour for tips also with tips, the best ones you can get in Santiago!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  1. What happens if we arrive late?

Try not to be! We wait for tourists 15 minutes before the start of the tour, in order to get acquainted and check everyone in. A manager will wait for around 5 to 10 minutes after the departure time, so if you are a couple of minutes behind, normally you can just join onto the tour at their first stop near the starting point.

  2. How much does it cost?

This is a pay-what-you-like tour. There are no fees. If you loved the tour, pay what you think the freelance guide deserves, and if you didn’t enjoy yourself, you are not expected to pay a single penny. The average tip is between $10 and $20 USD, but it is really down to the person to pay as they feel.

  3. How do we know who our freelance guide is?

It’s easy! They will be wearing a white and red striped T-shirt, just like the dude in the “Where’s Wally” books… Although this time they will stick out much more easily. Head over to them, and they will give you a warm welcome and let you know what to expect.

  4. What is the group size normally?

Group size varies between seasons. We are always prepared with backup freelance guides if the tour number exceeds 22, ensuring the quality does not waver. The tours tend to have a good amount of people, making it not only enjoyable, but also a good opportunity to meet fellow travelers. After the tour is over, people often go together to grab some food and wine!

  5. What ages is the tour suitable for?

This tour is suitable for all ages! In particular, our tours are enjoyable for the younger generations, with our high energy, freelance tour guides. It’s also appropriate for the wiser folk, and for people who love to learn about the real history and culture of Chile. However, it’s not recommended for those that have trouble walking or standing for periods of time, as you’ll be on your feet for around 3 hours.
