DAY 1: DEPARTURE
The adventure begins in Santa Marta, the oldest city in Colombia. You’ll depart from here at 8:30am and travel in a temperature-controlled van to La Aguacatera. Upon arrival to this place, you’ll change to a four-wheel drive vehicle for the next part of the journey to the town of Mamey, also called Machete Pelao. Once you get to Mamey, there’ll be time for lunch, before starting the 7.6 km trek to the first camp (Adam hut, peasant community).
The walk can take anything from 3 to 5 hours, it depends how fit you are. There’ll be a break at a crystal-clear river, where you can take a refreshing dip and have a quick rest. At the camp, your Indian guide will spend some time talking to you about the history and customs of their community and the region. You’ll spend the night here in a hammock.
DAY 2: PARADISE CABIN
Today you’ll be walking for around 8 hours. About halfway, there’ll be a visit to the indigenous community of Mutanzhi, and here you’ll spend some time meeting the people and seeing the way they live.
The camp for Day 2 is Paradise Cabin 3 Teyuna, where there’s an indigenous community. This place is located at an altitude of 830 metres above sea level, at the foot of Teizhuna (Teyuna), the holy city of the Tayrona. Today you’ll get to see the incredible flora and fauna of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. In the afternoon, you can relax and take a dip in the river. In the evening, you’ll learn more about the Lost City from your guide, who’ll explain its sacred meaning for the natives of the Sierra.
DAY 3: VISIT THE LOST CITY
Make sure you eat a good breakfast, as today is the day you’ve been waiting for! You’ll set off at 7:00am on the final part of your journey to the Lost City. It’s a bit of a climb, up 1,200 steps constructed by the ancient Tayrona people to reach the holy site. After about an hour, you’ll arrive at your destination. From here, the guide will show you around the various sacred spots. The Indian spiritual leader, el Mamo, will tell you sacred stories and give you his words of wisdom.
After this visit, at 11:00am you’ll head back to cabin 3 (Paradise cabin) for lunch. It will then be a 5 to 6 hour walk to camp 2 (Mumake cabin) where an indigenous community lives. Get some rest and a good night’s sleep here.
DAY 4: RETURN TO SANTA MARTA
This is the final morning! You’ll start to make your way back to the town of Mamey, stopping mid-way to visit a small waterfall where you can freshen up.
On arrival to Mamey, you’ll get some lunch, and later be picked up and be driven back to La Aguacatera. From there, it’s a temperature-controlled van back to Santa Marta. Expected arrival time is 4:00pm.
