DETAILED DESCRIPTION

DAY 1: DEPARTURE

You’ll start from the oldest city in Colombia - the romantic Santa Marta - leaving at around 8:30am in a temperature-controlled van to La Aguacatera. From there, it’s a 4x4 car driving you to the village of Mamey (also known as Machete Pelao), where you’ll enjoy lunch.

Once your energy levels are boosted, it will be time to start the 7.6 km hike to the first camp, where you’ll be spending the night. The time taken to complete this trek will depend on your physical condition, but it could be between 3 to 5 hours.

In the evening, your indigenous guide will spend some time with you and the group, talking about the next day’s trek. Take this unique opportunity to speak to the guide and learn more about his culture and the Sierra Nevada. Later, get some rest in your comfy hammock.

DAY 2: WIWA CAMP

After breakfast, it’s a 7.3 km trek from Wiwa camp 1 to Wiwa camp 2, a walk of 3 to 5 hours. At the second campsite, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with some of the indigenous community. You’ll enjoy lunch, before going to the Buritacas River, which is just a 5-minute trek away.

On the second evening, there’ll be wood fires, and the guide will talk about the traditions of the Wiwa community. You’ll sleep in a hammock tonight.

DAY 3: PARAISO CAMP

Following breakfast, you’ll begin the 7.2 km trek to reach camp 3 (Paraíso Teyuna), the sacred Tayronas city. On this journey, you’ll appreciate the wildlife, flora and fauna of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta (an impressive mountain range).

This evening, you’ll be able to relax and take a dip in the Buritacas river, before re-grouping with your guide, who will give a talk. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep in your hammock before the big day!

DAY 4: VISIT TO THE LOST CITY

Fill up at breakfast time, as today you’ll be going to the beautiful Lost City. It’s an ascent of 1,200 stairs - built by the Tayrona Indians – to reach the Ciudad Perdida. Once you reach the top, you’ll be able to explore the site and its sacred places. You’ll see La Casa del Mamo: this is a “ceremonial house” for the spiritual indigenous leader.

At around 11:00am, you’ll return to camp 3 for lunch, and after lunch it’s a descent of 5 to 6 hours to Wiwa camp 2. Later, you’ll have one last opportunity to spend the evening with your guide, and ask any questions you may have about the Wiwa culture.

DAY 5: RETURN TO SANTA MARTA

On the final morning after breakfast, you’ll go back to the village of Mamey for lunch. You’ll then return in a 4x4 car to Aguacatera, from where you’ll take the temperature-controlled van back to Santa Marta at 4:00pm approx.
