DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Hotel and hostel pick-up.

It begins by taking the route which leads to San Antonio de los Cobres, entering by the gorge "Quebrada del Toro". This gorge is set in an area of thick forest, colourful cacti, and giant rocks. From the entrance, you’ll get a great view of the “el Toro” viaduct.

You’ll continue your journey, visiting the mountainous region, seeing the cacti, and arriving to the small town of Santa Rosa de Tastil. Here, you’ll stop at some craft shops and museums. After, you’ll travel on towards San Antonio de los Cobres, pausing at a viewpoint which overlooks the village. Upon arrival to San Antonio, there’ll be time for lunch, as well as to explore the place.

Then begins the most inhospitable part of the journey. Passing through the Polvorilla Viaduct, we’ll progress on Route 40, known as ‘the road to the clouds’. Here, there are almost no inhabitants. We’ll be going in the direction of the Salt Flats (Salinas Grandes). The magnificent view reveals the impressive Tuzgle Volcano - at 5,500m altitude – as well as the opportunity to photograph wild animals like the vicuña.

The Salt Flats found in the Jujuy province are strange and beautiful – make sure you take plenty of photos. We will spend some time here at the Salina Grandes, before making our way to the picturesque village of Purmamarca, located in the Quebrada de Humahuaca. We’ll follow the Cuesta de Lipan, a section of steep zigzag, before visiting the iconic Cerro de los 7 Colores (Hill of 7 Colours). This is an alluringly striped rock formation, bordering the village of Purmamarca.

We will return to Salta, following a brief visit to San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital city of the Jujuy province.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  1. What time zone is used in Salta?

Local time in Salta is GMT -3, the same as on Argentina's mainland.

  2. What kind of weather can we find in Salinas Grandes?

La Puna - where Salinas Grandes is located - has very dry weather, with low humidity. Rainfall is high in the summer, and winds are strong as evening approaches (nights can be very cold). The sun is really strong, so you need to be very careful with UV radiation (bringing sunglasses is a must). In winter, the temperature drops below 0°C. Throughout the rest of the year, the temperature is also low, with average temperatures being 12°C (January) and 2.2°C (July). There are highs of 25°C and lows of -15°C.

  3. What should I bring to the tour?

Due to the dry, sunny, windy and cool weather you should bring: comfortable clothes, a jacket (afternoons can be cold), walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a breezer hat, and an umbrella (for rainy season). Don't forget to bring your camera, water, and extra cash for your personal expenses.

  4. What is the difference between Salinas Grandes and Uyuni Salt Flats?

Salinas Grandes (Argentina) is a lake that dried up in the Holocene. This is now a 525-sq-km crust of salt, up to half-a-metre thick, which is equivalent to the area of the city of Buenos Aires. It accumulates all kinds of salt - especially common salt (sodium chloride) - which can be marine or continental. On the other hand, The Uyuni Salt Flats (Bolivia) were part of a prehistoric salt lake - Lago Minchín - that dried up, leaving a couple of seasonal puddles and several salt pans, including the Uyuni Salt Flats. It accumulates all kinds of salt, especially the continental types. It is the world's largest salt flat, measuring 10,580 km2 (bigger than Lebanon), and is almost 50 times larger than our Salinas Grandes.

  5. Will I get problems with altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness is a real possibility here. If you are arriving directly from the coast, you may need up to a couple of days to acclimatize. Dizziness, shortness of breath, and headaches are common symptoms, but extended bouts of nausea and vomiting are not unheard of amongst those that have rushed their ascent. The locals swear by chewing coca leaves, and although they do relieve the symptoms, it may cause you to fail a drug test. Anyone not already fully acclimatized is advised to pick up some medicine from the pharmacy in Salta before departure. You can also drink tea or coffee to help (but most importantly, drink water to stay hydrated).

  6. I can’t find my accommodation listed in the operator’s pick up locations as I’m making my booking. What should I select?

This operator only offers pick-ups from the hotel and hostel accommodation listed, located in the centre. They do not provide pick-ups or drop-offs at private residences, Airbnbs, bus terminals etc. Select an alternative close by, and be ready there for pick-up at the time on your booking confirmation
